Port Aransas + North Padre

Drive-on beaches, ferry strategy, honest lodging choices, and the candy stop your children will remember longer than the condo you paid for.

The Salty Mom opinion

North Padre is the better choice when the beach is the actual destination. Stay quieter, skip the ferry drama, and drive into Port A when you want restaurants, shopping, or enough saltwater taffy to destabilize a minivan.

Actual names, not vague gestures

Good places to stay

North Padre rental

Best overall for a family: Look around Whitecap Beach, Padre Balli, or the canal neighborhoods. A house or condo with laundry, a kitchen, and easy beach access usually beats paying resort prices for amenities nobody uses.

Verify beach distance, stairs, pool barriers, parking, and actual beds.

Sandcastle Condominiums

Best practical Port A choice: Beachfront, boardwalk, pool, hot tubs, kitchens, and close to town and the golf-cart zone.

Units vary. Inspect the exact unit’s photos, recent reviews, washer/dryer, and sleeping arrangements.

Cinnamon Shore

Best polished splurge: Multiple pools, restaurants, beach crossovers, activities, and large-family homes.

Beautiful, organized, and fully aware of its own market value.

Port Royal

Best for pool-obsessed children: Large pool complex, slides, hot tubs, beachfront access, and roomy condos south of town.

Review the exact unit and current property conditions before booking.

Palmilla Beach

Best upscale alternative: Pools, beach services, restaurants, golf, and more room than a standard hotel.

Good when you want resort convenience without living directly in downtown Port A.

Lively Beach

What the hell is it? A quiet resort at 138 Zahn Road on southern Mustang Island, near Access Road 2 and just north of Packery Channel. It has a Corpus Christi address and is not central Port A.

Useful for quiet; unnecessary if North Padre is already your preference.

Know before you go

Prevent avoidable family bullshit

  • Check the TxDOT ferry wait before committing to the Aransas Pass route.
  • Buy the current beach parking permit before settling onto the sand.
  • Port A beach driving is 15 mph; watch children around the vehicle lane.
  • No glass on the beach. Your margarita does not outrank everybody’s feet.
  • Read the beach flag and designate one adult as water watcher.
  • Golf carts cannot travel on Highway 361 south of Avenue G.
  • Confirm whether “beach access” means walkable or a cheerful real-estate interpretation.
  • Prioritize laundry, outdoor rinsing, shade, and real beds over decorative pillows.

Required Port A ritual

Stop at Winton’s Island Candy.

601 S. Alister Street

Buy the saltwater taffy. Consider the fudge and caramels. Allow each child to choose candy, immediately question your decision, and repeat the tradition on the next trip anyway.
